ABOUT THE WORK

The Tarana, is a composition of Hindustani classical music in which vocal syllables are based in Arabic and Persian phonemes (units of sound) structured within a rhythmic cycle and melody. This composition has been adapted from music into the Kathak form. The movements are abstract, but strongly denote the vocabulary of Kathak. This Tarana is set to the evening Raag (melodic framework) Chayanat, and the 16 beat rhythmic cycle (Taal) of Teentaal.
