Festival Artist Feature: Tara Butler of Dust and Soul Dance

Tara Butler is the Artistic Director of Dust and Soul Dance and the choreographer of It Falls with The Rain which will be shared as an in-process showing for IN THE STUDIO at Guelph Youth Dance Studios on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at 3:30 PM. We are lucky to share some insights into Tara’s group work that she will be sharing with us in Guelph!

What motivated you to make the work you will be sharing at the Guelph Dance Festival?

Tara: This work, launched from my perspective as a frustrated mother with desire to leave her children a hopeful future for the planet, aims to provoke visceral emotions, catalyzing self reflection offering potential for change in the way we interact with the natural world. It seeks to make us “feel” climate change.

I wanted to create a work which provokes thought, inspires action and raises individual and collective awareness creating a deeper connection to the immediate need for environmental stewardship through a visually stimulating and physically emotional dance experience.

How long have you been working on this piece and how has it changed since its inception?

T: This creative exploration of this work began in 2022 with a Creation residency at The Registry theatre in Kitchener. It has definitely evolved in many ways. Mostly I think the work has developed clarity and become more focused in its message while also becoming more defined in its movement vocabulary and expression. The music has completely changed as I began using found music and I have since commissioned Edgardo Moreno to compose an original score for the work which is truly sublime.

What was your biggest takeaway from the process of creating this work?

T: From a choreographic perspective I have learned to trust my instincts even if I can’t explain them in the moment and that I really enjoy creating group work. It is a very satisfying experience which I hope to do a lot more of.

Also some universal feelings about our connection to the earth have continued to come up throughout the process which linger and infiltrate my day to day. I am hoping this work will have the desired impact of bringing awareness and collective action to help protect our planet.
